Why send greeting cards?

A greeting card gives us the opportunity to send a personalized message to convey a variety of sentiments to our family, friends, clients, customers or even employees. Our handmade cards are special and they can be displayed on a mantel, pinned on the refrigerator, or saved in a box of treasures. A card can bring a big smile to the recipient, even if the sentiment is just a simple hello. Who doesn’t love getting a special card in the mailbox addressed especially to them?

Did you know that for centuries people have exchanged messages of good will to celebrate holidays? The ancient Chinese sent messages to celebrate the New Year, and the early Egyptians conveyed greetings on papyrus scrolls. Germans printed New Year’s greetings from woodcuts in the 1400’s and by mid fifteenth century Europeans were exchanging Handmade paper Valentines.

In 1850 when the printing press was roaring, and the postage stamp was introduced, the greeting card was transformed from a relatively expensive handmade and hand delivered gift to a popular, affordable means of personal communication. This was followed by new trends like Christmas cards, the first of which appeared in published form in London, 1843. Back then companies began to hire artists to design cards that could be sent to friends and family. By the 1860’s cards grew even more popular, and companies began to mass-produce them.

Fast forward to the 70’s when smaller companies wanted in on the market, and started publishing more modern card designs with the name of a specific artist credited on the back of the card. By the 80’s there was a thriving market for what are now called “alternative” cards, which changed the entire look of the industry.

In the US alone, 6.5 billion greeting cards are purchased each year, at a total cost of more than $7 billion dollars. Matching the right card with the right sentiment to the right person is an art. Sending a card when it is least expected can make a lasting impression. And the right card is a gift in itself, and will bring joy to any special occasion, or just on a plain old regular day.
